CHARACTER INFO.
NAME: Edna

AGE: Old Unknown
APPEARANCE: Link
CANON POINT: Before the final showdown with Heldalf (but after the Normin sidequest with Phoenix and defeating her brother for good)

BACKGROUND: Zestiria's wikia page || Edna's wikia page

On the continent of Glenwood, Seraphim are beings akin to/between spirits and gods. Capable of superhuman feats such as manipulating the elements, they are generally associated with one of the natural 4: Fire, Water, Wind, and Earth. Humans are supposed to pray to the Seraphim and offer their gratitude, and in exchange, the Seraphim will bless the land and bring prosperity to the people. Normal humans cannot see them, though one born with naturally high resonance/raised among them may be able to perceive them. The ideal relationship between humans and seraphim is a symbiotic one. However, since the Age of Chaos when the 5 most powerful of Seraphim (considered godlike even among Seraphim) seem to have disappeared from the continent and taken their blessings with them, malevolence has been growing and spreading. Humans, Seraphim, and any sort of organism that becomes corrupted by the malevolence are turned into Hellions, basically monsters who generate disasters and cause chaos. Only the purifying fire from a Shepherd and the Prime Lord (a partner Seraph who took the Oath) may purify the hellion back to what it once was, but some cases of malevolence may be so strong that it'll leave even the Shepherd powerless. A dragon is a chief example: it's the irreversible final form that a Seraph takes, once it is too overtaken by the malevolence and can no longer be purified back to the Seraph that they once were.

Edna's older brother is such a being: a dragon. Not much is revealed of her past, but through occasional subtle mentions, Edna has stated that when he was still himself, her brother used to travel extensively (and bring her back souvenirs). She stayed behind on Rayfalke as he explored the world due to her introvert and people-disliking nature, confirmed by Lailah knowing where to find her but initially mistaking the dragon for Edna upon the encounter. It's also inferred that her brother Eizen was a good friend to Zaveid, whom the party also first meets on Rayfalke Spiritcrest: he was there to kill the dragon, his way of trying to give his friend Eizen and Eizen's little sister Edna peace and salvation. Edna initially refused to leave when Sorey asked for her assistance in aiding the humans to fix the bridge leading to Marlind. She reasoned that she must look after her brother, even if he's become a dragon that can no longer recognize her voice. Upon the arguments that she can't help her brother by remaining holed up, it's dangerous for her too if she stays, the urging that she should try to see for herself the same world her brother has seen, and Sorey's promise that they'll find another way together to bring Eizen back, Edna ultimately relents to his request. Agreeing to become Lailah's sublord, she proceeds to accompany Sorey's party on their journey.

Overworld context aside, Edna herself is an Earth Seraph. Despite her youthful appearance, she's at least over 20 years old. Edna and Lailah were acquainted before the events of the game, and Lailah was surprised to learn that her brother Eizen has become a dragon (it was Lailah's idea to go to Rayfalke Spiritcrest when the party pondered about getting help from an Earth Seraph), meaning they must've met and interacted before the Age of Chaos has begun. Lailah has explained that the Seraphs do have the power to subconsciously form their appearances, so it's very likely that as a Seraph who tremendously treasured her older brother, Edna has willed her body to keep the appearance of a small, dainty, and cute little sister.

PERSONALITY: "Is there a school you go to to get that dumb?"

Is the first sentence out of Edna's mouth, after Sorey's party narrowly manages to escape death from the dragon, her brother. She does hear him out after insulting his intelligence some more, but immediately rejects his request that she helps him help the humans by outright stating that she hates humans. It becomes obvious very quickly that despite her sweet and delicate appearance, she has an extremely sharp tongue and willingly chooses to not filter her words. Bluntly honest to possibly a sadistic degree, Edna calls things out as she sees them without much care for others' feelings, and never skips on a chance to insult tease those around her. She's told Lailah outright the Fire Seraph would be respected more if she worked on her personality, this first thing after they haven't seen each other for at least 20 years, and then proceeds to pin the nickname "Meebo" on Mikleo barely a minute after she joins the party. She's no qualms getting violent when someone doesn't watch THEIR tongue around her either: she's poked Mikleo with her umbrella hard enough to puncture the skin, when he kept wondering why a flower that shared Edna's name wasn't thorny nor poisonous. Her banter with Mikleo will continue throughout the course of the game, where she will keep (mercilessly) teasing him because frankly, he's the most fun to pick on. She does do her share in giving Zaveid deadpan stares, and never ceases to prey on Alisha's gullibility because it's funny.

Given her situation at the start of the game and what can be assumed through Lailah's words about her, Edna's a reclusive introvert who is at ease in being alone. She's quite fearless too, having likely spent several years in a dragon's company by her lonesome. That, however, may be more of a testament to her love, purity, and strength of will: the dragon is her beloved brother, hence she will not leave him no matter how dangerous it gets, and she still believes in him, hence managing to keep herself free of malevolence despite how powerful and overbearing her brother's domain may become. Her affection towards her brother is second to none: her glove and boots are his hand-me-downs, the normin mascot on her umbrella was a gift from him, and it is very likely that she ended up relenting to Sorey because he reminded her of her brother, who also loved exploring and adventure.

Despite her deadpan sarcastic nature and, let's be frank, mean personality, Edna can also be considerate. Passing by the mountain shrine Sorey saw when they were climbing the Spiritcrest looking for Edna, the party found it maintained with fresh flowers laid on top of it. They assumed the flowers to be offerings presented by humans who still believed in the Seraphim, but Edna reveals after joining that she's the one who put the flowers there, for the sake of the humans that her brother has killed in the dragon's indiscriminate rampage. She also takes the time to explain things to Sorey and Mikleo, and she can give out compliments - they just tend to be backhanded ones. When Mikleo asked her why she picked an umbrella as her weapon, a water-based item, she plainly explains to him it's precisely because of the water element that she chose it. Using a weapon whose affinity is weak against the Seraph's element helps in channeling, hence why Lailah uses paper (wind), and Dezel uses a metallic pendulum (earth). She DOES call him silly and ignorant, but also congratulates him on how far he's come, since all the expertise he's gained from the staff, an earth-based item (when he should be going with fire for maximum efficiency), is from sheer effort and hard work alone.

On the good side of her bluntness (it exists, really!), Edna is straightforward and honest. After learning the truth about Maltran, Alisha's mentor, she's the one who keeps asking Sorey and Rose several times if they're sure they wanted to keep the truth from the knight-princess. In Alisha's story DLC epilogue, Edna did not cross Rose when Rose refused to give more details about what happened to Sorey. When Rose seemed finally okay with letting Alisha know just exactly what's happened, however, it was Edna who delivered the truth when both Lailah and Rose found excuses to not explain it themselves. She knew what must be done for her brother too, acknowledging at the end of her sidequest that she has averted her eyes from the truth for too long. There was only one way to end Eizen's suffering, and she must do her part in putting both their souls at rest. She thanks the party out loud after they aid her in killing the dragon, giving her sincere gratitude (and getting a good cry out of her system) before reverting back to her usual self.

She can also be silly and childish, assisting Lailah in her puns when she's not making her own. Edna canonly spends an entire skit making butt puns, to the chagrin of Mikleo. She quite enjoys saying outrageous things just to get a reaction out of people, 'stirring shit' as one would put it in far less delicate language. In a skit involving cactus, Edna commented on how it was plantracist that plenty of flower species out there had thorns, but only the rose got a proverb out of it. She's also convinced Alisha that a dance called the 'Squirrelcarina' exists, as well as how a 'slumbering party' was a harsh trial of asceticism where one withholds their material desires before facing off against a monster called "Pi-Loh" (all tales that Alisha swallows, the poor gullible sheltered princess knight). ...TL;DR, Edna loves spewing bullshit and feeding it to people. Don't let this quiet and small girl fool you with her sweet and innocuous exterior: she's one tough and twisted evil nail on the inside, or at least, Mikleo would definitely agree so!

Oh, and Edna has a thing for Normins. She may deny it, but she's good at picking them out, has one hanging on her umbrella that she's 100% aware of, and knows a great deal about them.

ABILITIES: As an Earth Seraph, Edna is strongly attuned to the Earth. She is capable of offensive, supportive, and healing earth magic, she can also fight with her umbrella. Boasting a naturally strong physical defense due to her affinity, she can also channel her power into raw force that can (help Sorey) shatter large boulders. In a skit she also says how she has good luck and good health, listing off various impressive (getting caught in a landslide) and not-so-impressive (stubbing her toe) incidents she managed to walk away from hunky dory with nary a scratch on herself.

Outside of battle, Edna has learned to fuse weapons from Lailah (using two equipment pieces of the same name, forge them together to create new skills and boost their stat). She can also somehow mysteriously find money just by walking around. Furthermore, she's capable of sensing Normins, cute little mascot supportive Seraphs who can boost the power to others of their kind as well as bestow additional bonus traits to equipment. She's also well-versed in flora and minerals, knowledge indeed natural to an Earth Seraph.

INVENTORY: The clothes on her back, her umbrella, the holy Earth relic (the vessel she resides in to avoid malevolence), and the normin on her umbrella. It's... real, though it pretends to be a plush mascot and does so relatively well (the normin will keep pretending to be a plush unless something drastic and existence-threatening may befall Edna).
